PREVENT INFANT CHOKING

We all know that infants just love exploring their new world with all of their senses and who can blame them? As parents, we have to protect the little ones as they learn and grow. Hopefully if you are a parent or expecting parent you have already read some prevention tips to keep your child safe. In this article we will be covering some of the common ways to prevent infant and small children from choking and suffocating.

PREVENTION:

Baby’s crib is her place to sleep and should be safe.
  • Make sure all railings are secure and spaced 2 3/8” or less apart
  • Pillows, blankets, toys and stuffed animals should be removed
  • All cords strings should be out of reach. Example: Window blinds
  • Remove clothing from baby that has hoodies or any strings
  • Make sure baby only sleeps in her crib and not on couches, chairs, etc.
Playtime should be educational, fun and safe.
  • Supervise baby at All times. Playpens are not babysitters.
  • Consider a small parts tester to ensure baby toys are not choking hazards
  • Make sure your environment is well ventilated
  • Put older children’s toys out of reach
  • Avoid small, hard or round snacks
  • Do not allow baby to wear jewelry, loose fitting clothing, purses or anything with strings attached
Your home is Baby’s castle.
  • Put yourself in your baby’s shoes while baby proofing your home
  • Keep all strings and cords out of reach
  • Cabinets, pantries, trash cans and drawers should be off limits
  • Block off access to power outlets or any exposed electricity
  • Keep your home clean and free of clutter (I know it’s hard, but you have to)

I would recommend that you research more into baby proofing your home and seek the advice of a baby proofing expert. You can never be too safe when it comes to you precious little ones!

Even some of the most cautious parents have experienced a choking or suffocating infant. This is why it is extremely important that you make the time to learn CPR so you know exactly what to do when you little one needs rescuing.
